A pretty reasonable historical drama telling the story of George Joseph Smith who was the infamous 'Brides in the Bath' killer. He ended up being caught, prosecuted and then hung in 1915 for the murder in a bathtub of three of his wives. Women who he had married specifically so that he could cash in on their life insurance policies once he had topped them.

Anyway in Martin Kemp's spirited turn as George Smith, he looks every inch the serial husband, sporting a black moustache and a rather seedy fringe. Despite these obvious warnings (I guess they hadn't seen Kemp in action in Eastenders) women seem hell-bent on marrying him... and all it takes to transform Smith from a blushing bridegroom into a weeping widower is a quick tug on the ankles while the missus is soaking in the tub. Splosh! Glug, glug, glug...

The whole story is boxed off at a cracking pace. We get some delicious comic relief from Richard Griffiths as Smith's counsel, and some charming support in the shape of sundry seaside boarding-house landladies along the way. There is no attempt in this to probe the killer's psyche. And that's great, because this is entertainment. This is exactly the thing that George Orwell described about the British people: their love after tucking into a hearty roast dinner of spending the afternoon reading about a juicy murder in their Sunday papers. Lovely stuff.
